New Middle School Update

5/25/2012

Canyons Board Members Sherril Taylor and Paul McCarty held an information meeting May 24 at Draper Elementary concerning the new middle school that will be built in Draper.  Here are the highlights of the meeting:
- The new middle school site is 13200 South 1300 East.
- The new middle school (Crescent View Middle School) will have the same boundaries as the new Corner Canyon High School.
- The new middle school is scheduled to open for the 2013-14 school year in conjunction with the new boundaries and new grade configurations.
- VCBO Architects have been selected to design the new school.
- Draper City is currently doing a traffic study of the area because of the increased traffic that will occur once the school opens.  The district expect the results in the next two to three weeks.
- Teachers, School Community Council members and PTA leadership of the impacted schools will make recommendations during the design process.
- The district will hold a ground-breaking ceremony for the school sometime later this summer.
- The new school is being paid for with $20 million from the bond (originally intended to renovate Crescent View Middle School) and existing capital outlay funds.  There will be no tax increase to taxpayers.
- The school will open with 1,500 students and will become the largest middle school in the district.
