Did you know?

10/22/2014

The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to present a visible commitment to a safe, healthy and drug-free lifestyle.

Red Ribbon Week began in 1988 in honor of DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who was kidnapped and killed in Mexico in February of 1985. Agent Camarena, then 37, had uncovered a multi-billion dollar drug scam in which he suspected officers of the Mexican Army, police forces and government.

It is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country.

Red Ribbon Week Starts Monday

10/17/2012

Oct. 22-26 we will celebrate Red Ribbon Week.  The purpose of Red Ribbon Week is to educate students about the dangers and consequences of drugs and alcohol, and violence.

Here is glance at our daily themes:

Monday:  Take Aim Against Drugs (Students will create a pledge against drugs banner)

Tuesday:  I'm a Jean-ius. I'm Drug Free.  (Wear jeans and be entered in prize drawings.)

Wednesday:  Drug Free- The "Write" Choice  (Wear red, red, red! Red pens to be used for school work.)

Thursday:  I Elect To Be Drug Free (Students will cast drug free ballots during lunch)

Friday:  Color My World Drug Free (Wear crazy colors and patterns. Election results revealed.)

During the week classes will be creating drug-free poster slogans and our students will vote on their favorites.  Awards will be given to the winning class from each grade.

Drug awareness and abuse prevention is an important topic that should not be limited to one week a year. Rather it should be an on going conversation in family life. We encourage you to spend quality time with your children and often discuss with them the values your family believes in. We hope as you discuss the activities of this Red Ribbon Week it will help you start another conversation with your children on this important topic.

Red Ribbon Week Starts Monday

10/20/2011

Draper Elementary students will participate in Red Ribbon Week activities next week, Oct. 24-27. Red Ribbon Week commemorates the heroic actions and sacrifice of DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs.

Draper students will recognize this event with theme days, daily drug facts (grade appropriate), signing pledge cards (Draper Police will present to the City Council), and completing schoolwork in RED ink.

Theme days are as follows:
Monday: “Band together against Drugs” (wear headbands, silly bands, wrist bands)
Tuesday: “Turn your back on Drugs” (wear your shirt backwards)
Wednesday: “Sock it to Drugs” (wear crazy socks)
Thursday: “I am REDdy to say No to Drugs” (wear as much RED as you can)

Draper Elementary is hosting a Parent Education Evening, Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 7-8:30 p.m. There will be a drug awareness presentation by Drug Free Draper, an internet safety presentation by Sally Linford, an online math presentation by Camille Cole (Draper’s technology specialist), and a discussion by Ou Laoshi on “pinyin” and ways for parents to assist students learning Chinese. Each of these 30-minute presentations will be offered three times during the evening so parents can attend any three in any order. The PTA will also be hosting a refreshment station. Due to the sensitive nature of some of these topics, we ask that children be left at home and PARENTS ONLY attend.

We hope that you will remind and encourage your children to participate in the daily activities, and, if you haven’t already, begin an open dialogue with them about the dangers of drug use.
